CHRISTMAS IN ASIA

Christians in Asia are preparing for the Christmas celebration too. Thank you for your prayers for Pastor A on Cijin Island. This island is connected to Kaohsiung City and is an important harbor internationally. Many families in the fishing business live in this harbor. Pastor A and friends started work there some time ago,  AND it has not been easy for sure..

These people are heavily involved in idol worship, Buddhism, Taoism, Yiguandao and others. For many people there is a mixing of religious beliefs which we call syncretism. So many different things are worshiped: people, animals things in nature, unusual sites, etc. Theologians refer to this as animism — the fearful worship of spirits. So many in Asia do live in fear of what might happen and do whatever they think they can to avoid catastrophe. s-l1000Many are very superstitious. In these trying times it is common to see people wear amulets (an ornament or small piece of jewelry- bracelets, or necklaces, thought to give protection against evil, danger, or disease.) However, I have also seen people so frightened that they wear multiple bracelets on the same arm to give added protection. The selling of amulets is quite common across Asia.

This is the kind of environment in which Pastor A works. He’s a guy who does not give up. If you remember, a little over two years ago, his wife also passed away. So many people have prayed for him, his family and the ministry in this fishing village. As I reported not long ago, they now have a new building in a great location right at the entrance to the island.

God is faithful and some may think that work is moving slowly, but God is alive and well in Cijin Island. Above you can view the baptism of a young man whom Pastor A has grateful for the many workers who have come to assist and partner with Pastor A. And at this Christmas time, we ask you to join us in prayer as they celebrate and share the joy of Christ and his birth with the people of Cijin Island. We do pray for them to have a very Merry and Blessed Christmas.

♥Please Pray♥

When we speak of Hokkien Harvest ministry, we are sharing history that includes many friends and co-workers. Some are local ministry workers, others have been career missionaries, short term missionaries and many more have been volunteers in ministry.

24294009_10208555953451302_3838544163153555681_nLast week, one of our career missionaries with imb, past team members and good friends, Mike Miller, suffered a mild stroke. He and his wife, Carolyn, serve in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Mike’s prognosis is good and he is currently in rehab in a hospital in their city. Please pray for Mike and Carolyn as they face this new challenge. Pray for Mike’s complete recovery, and wisdom for medical personnel as they oversee his care.

We are very grateful for Mike and Carolyn’s service. Thank you so much for linking with us in prayer and supporting this family. We are also grateful to see all the people who are supporting and encouraging them from around the world. Keep praying and cheering! Mike and Carolyn will keep us updated.

PEOPLE IN CRISIS

This week we had the opportunity to spend time with two of our younger grandchildren. The three year old made the statement, “I want to do this by myself, but will you help heartme?” That has a lot of meat in it to think about. I thought to myself that this is much like the way I act with God. I want to be in charge. I want what I want, and when I realize I can’t do it on my own . . . I may or may not admit that. Instead, I might play games with God to get what I want. Not good but a common challenge for people.

Have you ever felt almost overwhelmed — well at least very sad because you see things happening in the lives of family and friends who are headed down roads of destruction and it seems there is nothing you can do to make it better? Brown-January-2014-2-300x200Robert and I love to help people, that’s what ministry is for us. But sometimes no matter how much we care, people may not accept our help or listen to our advice or suggestions.

In the last few weeks we have journeyed with friends through some very deep waters. In fact, if a miracle doesn’t happen, two of our friends are filing for divorce today. We are also surrounded by other hurting families. We have also seen parents abandon children — parents prostitute themselves — children running wild down dangerous roads — children struggling with gender issues from houses that are turned upside down — a husband physically abusing his wife — an alcoholic father not providing appropriate care for his sons — and children running free in a pornographic and drug infested environment.

A scripture came to my mind and I have put a lot of thought into it. downloadDo you remember the story of King David when his world was turned upside down and his son, Amnon, raped his sister, Tamar? Following the rape, the scripture reads: Then suddenly Amnon’s love turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her.

It seems that in our world today we are often DRIVEN by emotions and our passions. Whether it makes sense or not, we want what we want! Please pray for the people mentioned above us well as our Hokkien workers as they deal with these families in need. Lives are at stake . . . Oh, how much we wish people would stop, pray and look for wise choices.
