Lunar Calendar: July 16
Pray Courageously
Thank you for praying with us during 30 Days of Fasting and Prayer during Ghost Month. For Day 16 click below for the Hokkien audio and written Chinese, and an English summary is also provided.
Luke 11:5-8: 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
There is an annual event in the United States called “See You At The Pole.” The purpose of the event is to encourage students everywhere to gather at the school’s flagpole and pray for their school, friends, family, church and community. Usually this event attracts a lot of people; however, in one high school only one boy came. This brave young man stood there alone, praying alone. A passer-by was so touched by the young man’s bravery that he took a photo and posted it on Facebook. He posted: “I commend the young man that stood alone at Lake Minneola High School See You At The Pole Day. I weld up with tears, happy tears, proud tears. I honestly didn’t know that it was today until after I had left and heard it on the radio. Please take a moment to pray for our children, our schools, teachers and administrators. Pray for protection over them, guidance, wisdom and a wonderfully blessed year. Please no rude comments”.
The bold and courageous act of this young man inspired many to pray. Even those who professed no faith applauded this young man who was bravely willing to stand up for his faith. Brothers and sisters, please notice that in verse 8 our Lord said to us” I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
This means that he was willing to take a bold risk. The friend got up and gave him bread, not because of friendship, because of the courage of the one who asked. He bravely begged, knowing that he might make his friend angry or cause him to reject him, but he was willing to take the risk. We see the young man in this flagpole story also as a bold witness. He was willing to take a bold risk for the Lord, and even if no one else responded he was willing to take the risk and stand there alone.
The message of the Lord Jesus to us is that if we need any kind of help, we should boldly come to him. Nothing is impossible for him, so we must boldly ask the Lord for strength and help. Ephesians 3:20 tells us that: God is able to do more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. Therefore dear brothers and sisters, the courage and boldness with which we pray reflect our belief in God and our confidence in him.
Pray:
Dear Heavenly Father, we pray that you will powerfully shine your truth into our hearts. Enable us to truly believe that you are so very great and powerful, and that nothing is impossible for you. We often dare not ask you for great things, because we do not have full confidence in your greatness and power. Lord, we ask you to help us to be bold and be willing to ask you to perform signs and wonders for our Hokkien speaking family and friends who have not yet put their trust in the Lord, and for all of our Hokkien ministries as well. Allow us to experience your mighty power. We pray this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
